sober living philadelphia pennsylvaniaThe Basics

Based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Joy of Living is a multi-faceted organization that provides sober living to men and women in recovery from addiction. Additionally, clients can also receive referrals for further treatment, case management and advocacy services.

Accommodations and Amenities

While the organization operates a total of 10 homes throughout Philadelphia, its flagship location is a 23-bed facility for men. Residents stay in shared rooms with two to three other clients in dorm-style accommodations, equipped with twin beds, dressers and closet space. Common areas include a lounge with cable TV, a communal dining room, on-site laundry, a yard and free weights. During their stay, residents are given three meals a day by on-staff chefs.

Rules and Regulations

To stay at Joy of Living, residents must submit to regular and random drug tests and obey a basic behavioral contract forbidding violence and sexual activity. The first two weeks of the program are more structured and help clients acclimate to their new environment. This phase includes one-on-one case management to help residents get government IDs, find outpatient care, if necessary, and apply for any state benefits they may qualify for.

After this initial phase, residents mostly live independent lives but are encouraged to seek employment, volunteer work, pursue education or attend treatment. The organization also hosts on-site peer-driven groups that discuss 12-step recovery, relapse prevention, life skills and other rotating topics. There are no mandatory lengths of stay.

Extras

Aside from the above, staff members also provide job training and help with resume building for those in need. Joy of Living hosts regular community service opportunities and team-building exercises, which includes playing sports, sober activities and local field trips. Transportation to outings is provided.

In Summary

Overall, Joy of Living offers a solid transitional living option to adults with flexible lengths of stay. Residents are expected to work a 12-step program and remain active in the community, allowing them to create good habits through accountability. For those in the area seeking an affordable and potentially long-term sober living solution, Joy of Living is worth consideration.
