Housing Works Review
Housing Works is a New York-based nonprofit organization dedicated to helping homeless people living with AIDS or HIV. With financial aid from entrepreneurial businesses, Housing Works is able to advocate and provide services for a variety of communities in and around New York. Their substance abuse treatment program, known as OASAS, provides outpatient care and mental health services.
Treatment and Staff
As an initial step, OASAS develops an individualized treatment plan based on the unique needs of each client. The goal is to treat the whole person rather than just their addiction.
The services offered are individual, group and family counseling, mental health services, on-site medical care, HIV testing and case management. Treatment includes DBT and clients typically attend group therapy daily and individual therapy twice a week, while family counseling is usually once a week. If needed, OASAS also provides help with legal issues and assists in finding employment or housing for clients during or after treatment.
Through their various services, Housing Works aims to make a client less likely to harm themselves or others, improve their daily living skills outside of the program, improve overall physical and mental health and provide skills for sober living. The staff at OASAS includes LSWs, Master’s-level therapists, MFTs and CADCs.

While OASAS does not offer much in the way of extra amenities or luxuries, Housing Works provides countless services including mental health care, medical care, housing resources, dental care, transportation, family-based services, job training, legal support, homeless outreach and sex worker outreach.
