Engage Review
Engage offers outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment to teens and young adults. Its Beyond Program, an adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for teens 13 to 17, provides dual diagnosis support and requires family participation in therapy.
Engage employs “an integrated, collaborative approach personalized for the unique needs of each individual and family” and its clinicians work to create authentic connections with clients to earn their trust and facilitate their goals. Located in Westlake Village, a Los Angeles suburb on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Engage opened its doors in 2012.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients receive a customized treatment plan that includes group therapy Monday through Thursday from 4 to 7 pm. Clients also have individual therapy as needed and family therapy at least once a week. The duration of treatment is progress-based, but most clients stay in the IOP for three months.
Treatment in Beyond focuses on helping teens develop a connection to their community and build self-esteem. It does this through processing groups, experiential social activities and by bringing in inspiring guest speakers who’ve thrived in sobriety.
Processing groups and individual and family therapy use CBT, DBT and psychodynamic processing to help clients develop coping skills and healthy boundaries. Clients participate in experiential therapy such as yoga and art therapy and hiking and social activities in which they can receive coaching should they become triggered by social or environmental stimuli.
Attendance at 12-step meetings is not a requirement of the IOP, but participating in a peer support program such as NA/AA, SMART Recovery or Refuge Recovery is highly encouraged.
The treatment team in Beyond is primarily comprised of LMFTs. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support can also schedule sessions with Engage’s psychiatrist. The treatment team is happy to provide coordinated care with outside psychiatrists and other clinicians whose work with the client pre-dates their enrollment in Beyond.
Extras
Once clients complete IOP, they may step down to attending group therapy twice a week and then once a week, in Beyond’s Alumni group. Engage provides a weekly parenting support group on Monday evenings and a parenting education group on Thursday evenings. Parents of clients can also receive private parenting coaching sessions.
