Portland OregonDe Paul Treatment Centers Review

De Paul Treatment Centers provides detox, residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment to the residents of Portland, Oregon and surrounding areas. Its adult residential facility is located in downtown Portland and youth are housed in a residence in northeast Portland. Each program offers dual diagnosis support and advocates the 12-step framework and family engagement in treatment. De Paul has been in operation since 1977 and has helped over 30,000 residents heal from addiction.

Accommodations and Food

Both the adult and youth facilities have bright, modern home-like atmospheres. Adult residents have one roommate and share bathrooms. Youth residents reside in gender-specific dorms. Both facilities house men and women in separate floors or wings.

A kitchen staff prepares all meals and snacks. Male and female youth residents take their meals at separate times. Vending machines are also available.

The facilities have lounges with TVs, games and books for recreation. They also have small workout areas and exercise equipment. Residents can go on supervised walks for exercise. Electronics are not permitted.

Treatment and Staff

Incoming clients have a full bio-psycho-social assessment. Those in need of detox do so on-site, a process which takes anywhere from two to 10 days. Private insurance or self-pay adult clients are then enrolled in an accelerated program that involves additional daily group therapy, so that they may step down to outpatient treatment earlier following completion of the standard 30-day program.

All treatment groups at De Paul are gender-specific. The cornerstone of treatment is DBT and all clients attend a daily DBT group in addition to daily groups that use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) to help clients handle triggers and develop coping skills. All clients meet with a therapist, usually LPCs or MFTs, at least once a week for individual therapy and those in need of dual diagnosis support also meet with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner.

The treatment team encourages clients to attend daily on-site 12-step meetings. As they near the end of their treatment plans, clients may be eligible to receive passes to attend off-site meetings as well.

Youth clients participate in daily DBT groups and have individual therapy at least once a week. They attend an accredited on-site school in which they have customized curricula for their grade level and educational goals. Adolescent clients also create a Plan for Success with their counselors and teachers to serve as a roadmap in recovery.

Extras

For aftercare, many clients choose to continue low-cost outpatient treatment at De Paul’s outpatient facility in nearby Hillsboro, Oregon.

Trips to museums and sporting events are periodically planned by the staff. De Paul hosts a weekly Support Persons therapy group and encourages clients to bring loved ones in for family therapy. De Paul also provides DUI services.

In Summary

De Paul Treatment Centers have been serving Portland’s youth and adults for 40 years. Its gender-specific treatment aids clients in effectively processing trauma, and its DBT-based curriculum helps clients learn alternatives to addictive behavior and how to set motivating goals in recovery.
