Dartmouth Hitchcock Psychiatric AssociationDartmouth Hitchcock Psychiatric Association Review

Associated with the Ivy League’s Dartmouth College, the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center offers substance abuse treatment and dual diagnosis support through the Dartmouth Hitchcock Psychiatric Association. Their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides services for clients over the age of 18 and their families. Located in Lebanon, New Hampshire, this facility also offers medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone for clients who are addicted to opioids.

Treatment and Staff

As an initial step, the DHPA program provides clients with a comprehensive evaluation, followed by the creation of an individualized treatment plan. Treatment options include individual therapy and group therapy, as well as psychiatric support for those with co-occurring disorders. Medication management is also provided for those requiring Suboxone or taking psychiatric drugs. The program is designed for those who need treatment several times per week, but do not require an inpatient or hospital program for detox. However, if those services are necessary, DHPA provides referrals to facilities throughout New Hampshire.

The IOP program uses the motivational model of treatment that allows clients to participate in determining the pace and intensity of their treatment. The length of the program is usually around 12 weeks, but it depends on the individual. The treatment model combines CBT and an introduction to the 12 steps. Clients are expected to join a recovery group program such as AA, and follow up with their case managers every month for at least a year after treatment has concluded.

The initial four to six weeks of IOP treatment are the most intensive, with clients attending sessions three or more times per week. The next two to four weeks focus on the transition to daily life in recovery, with the final four focused on continuing care. Clients taper the number of sessions they attend throughout the final weeks of the program.

Groups are offered Monday through Friday at a variety of times during the day and in the evening. Sessions focus on relapse prevention, mindfulness/interpersonal effectiveness (MIE), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and behavioral therapy. Individual therapy is available by appointment.

The clinical staff includes nurses, doctors and psychiatrists, as well as case managers assigned to each individual. Additionally, students and post-doctoral trainees are offered training through DHPA and are present on site.

Extras

The DHPA perinatal addiction treatment program provides specialized intervention and IOP for pregnant and postpartum women. The typical length of this program is six to nine months.

In Summary

The Dartmouth Hitchcock Psychiatric Association is an affordable, well-respected evidence-based resource for substance abuse treatment and co-occurring disorders in New Hampshire. Offering a strong IOP program, they allow clients to find recovery with the assistance of a wide range of therapeutic methods.
