California Highlands Review
Located just outside of Palm Springs in Southern California is California Highlands, a luxury residential substance abuse treatment facility. California Highlands offers individualized programming, group and individual therapy and aftercare planning. Treatment includes CBT-based therapy in addition to holistic treatment approaches. The program is open to adult men and women who are 18 and older.
Accommodations and Food
The facility is on 40 acres on quiet, serene landscape in the peaceful desert. The building includes modern and luxurious amenities like a fitness center, pool and game room complete with pool table. The comfortable accommodations make the client feel like they’re at a spa with the warmly decorated bedrooms, which offer queen sized beds and hotel-grade linens. Though the bedrooms are double occupancy, there is quite a bit of privacy seeing that the rooms themselves are spacious. Each room provides a flat screen mounted television, dressers, a desk and plenty of closet space and a private bathroom. Common areas include comfortable plush couches and chairs, a state of the art kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a dining room that overlooks the beautiful desert landscape with views of the pink sky at dusk are included. There are also docking centers for cell phones and laptops (which are allowed) and a protected lounge area next to the pool.
All the food is prepared on-site by a staff chef who makes elegant, gourmet cuisine that is healthy and delicious, and made with the guidance of a nutritionist who makes sure the meals are beneficial for the clients’ recovery and health.
Treatment and Staff
California Highlands combines evidence-based and scientifically proven therapeutic approaches within the spiritual setting of the facility. The customized treatment plans include education, counseling and relapse prevention into every program. The programs are between 30 and 60 days on average, and during this time the clients work to establish an long term options for maintaining sobriety that can include either a sober living facility or outpatient treatment for when they return home.
A typical day includes an early morning wake up and meditation, healthy meals and snacks, process groups, goal setting, exercise and individual therapy. Therapy approaches include CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in addition to meditation and mindfulness techniques. The clients participate in a number of activities that address the root of addiction, identifying triggers and developing coping skills. There is also a focus on positive social interaction, so the group numbers are small to allow for more sharing and connection within the community.
The Master’s-level clinicians that care for their clients, include LCSWs, MFTs and CADCs, have many years experience working in the field of addiction, with many being in recovery themselves.
Extras
There are several recreational activities the clients participate in during their time at California Highlands that include hikes, yoga and exercise. There are also house activities like movie nights or outings for dinner.
California Highlands offers the clients family members support throughout the treatment process through education and communication. They also encourage the family members to reach out to the clients during their program.
