Bellwood Health Services Outpatient Review
Dr. Gordon Bell established Bellwood Health Services in 1984 with his daughter and introduced a holistic approach to addiction treatment in Toronto, Canada. The outpatient program though Bellwood Health Services, which is part of the Edgewood Health Network in Canada, provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Calgary and Toronto. Treatment includes evidence based therapy methods like CBT and the 12 steps for adult men and women who are 19 and older. Phased programs include psychoeducation and aftercare in a structured and supportive setting.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient programs at Bellwood Health are individualized and begin with an assessment to determine which treatment process would be the most suitable and effective for each client. This determines whether the client would need medication management or Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) during the IOP process. Regardless, the IOP runs Mondays through Thursdays for about three hours a day and consists of group therapy sessions, psychoeducation, individual therapy and frequent drug and alcohol monitoring and screening for approximately 12 weeks. At the end of this program there is an option for continuing care where the client would come in for individual sessions once a week or twice a month.
Therapeutic methods include DBT, EMDR, Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention and life skills. There is also a focus on anger management and coping skills. The holistic element to treatment at Bellwood is guided meditation and relaxation techniques that are incorporated group or individual sessions, along with regular exercise. The clinical and medical staff on hand at Bellwood specializes in addiction and offers many years of experience. There are medical doctors, LPNs and psychiatrists on the medical side and LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs rounding out the clinical side.
Extras
There is an intensive family program that lasts four days once a month at the facility. This program includes group therapy, education and workshops on how to set boundaries and communication. There is also an aftercare program that lasts nine months for clients who complete treatment, and aftercare services are also offered to family members.
In Summary
Dr. Bell’s legacy is to approach each client as a blank slate and provide treatment that is specific to them. This has continued at Bellwood as each individual that walks through the clinic’s doors are regarded with dignity and respect, and provided with tools to help them live a life free of drugs and alcohol.
