Addiction Medicine and Health Advocates, Inc. (AMHA) is a drug and alcohol treatment facility in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  This CARF-accredited facility offers individualized, holistic and evidence-based services for substance abuse, including outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP). A methadone maintenance program is also available.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, an intake counselor meets with each client to design individualized treatment plans, setting achievable and healthy goals for each individual. Those participating in methadone maintenance go to the facility every day in the morning or afternoon for doses and typically also participate in either outpatient or IOP. Outpatient and IOP can include group therapy, individual therapy or both. Those in the maintenance program start with higher doses and slowly taper off over time, enabling clients to eventually not need the medication at all.

Those taking part in outpatient treatment typically attend group sessions once a week, though IOP ups that requirement to three times a week for two hours. Still, AMHA designs all its programs to best fit each client’s needs at any given time, so these are more flexible guidelines than hard rules. As the program continues, they may step down to only one or two therapy sessions a month. Group therapy covers psychoeducation, relapse prevention, HIV education and parenting skills. AMHA also offers outside resources for clients who need assistance with job placement, medical needs and housing programs. All therapy at the facility is evidence-based and focuses on behavioral modification, using DBT, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) techniques.  A medical director who holds CAS and LCSW certifications oversees the programs.

Extras

AMHA offers an aftercare program where clients can attend group therapy sessions once a week. The facility also provides couples and family therapy services for clients who are participating in another treatment program. These sessions are typically arranged on an individual basis.

In Summary

The programs at AMHA offer support and guidance to clients placing emphasis on each individual’s unique circumstances. Though there is nothing particularly esoteric about the treatment here, by giving clients clear boundaries and structure AMHA provides a safety net that allows for the healing process to take place.
