Acadia: San Juan Capestrano Hospital Review
San Juan Capestrano Hospital is a system of hospitals distributed throughout Puerto Rico. With the main hospital in San Juan, SJCH is a large psychiatric facility with 172 beds for clients suffering from acute mental health issues. For over 26 years, SJCH has offered services for adults and adolescents, including chemical dependency and detox.
Chemical dependency services are available on an outpatient basis for adults, and are offered at the San Juan, Hatillo, Mayagüez, Caguas, Humacao, Manatí, Condado, Carolina, Ponce, Bayamón and Guaynabo facilities.
As a member of the Acadia Healthcare network, San Juan Capestrano Hospital is just one of many behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the US, its territories and in the UK with residential, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to beginning treatment, all potential clients must schedule an appointment for a bio-psycho-social assessment which determines the presence of any co-occurring disorders as well as a need for detox. Depending on the results of the assessment, the client is placed in either the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Both programs are tailored for adults aged 18 and above who still require some structure in their recovery plans. Both programs follow a similar structure with three phases and a step down system. Clinical staff utilize CBT, DBT and life skills training.
The initial phase of treatment meets for three sessions of group therapy three days a week for three weeks. The second phase meets for three sessions a day for two days a week, for eight weeks. The final phase meets for three sessions per day, one day a week for five weeks. Individual therapy is scheduled at the convenience of the client and their primary counselor. Group and individual therapy topics include development of healthy coping skills, stress management, relapse prevention, healthy relationships, grief and loss and women’s issues. Clients are also introduced to 12-step meetings and the principles behind AA/NA recovery.
The PHP track follows the same three phase time frame, but offers more intensive and focused treatment hours. Depending on the facility location, clients may attend up to eight hours of treatment in a day. The overall program length is shorter than the 16-week IOP track, averaging at about eight weeks in total. Progress through the PHP may shift the client to the IOP track if they need reduced hours and a longer stretch of time in recovery.
Extras
A family program is available and built into each treatment plan. The family program aims to inform family members on how to best support their loved one, and how to reduce codependency and enabling behaviors.
