St. Louis MissouriAcadia: McCallum Place Outpatient Review

McCallum Place provides outpatient and residential treatment for eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating and compulsive exercising with two locations in Missouri—in St. Louis and Columbia—and one in Overland Park, Kansas (near Kansas City). It aims to “help patients restore energy, exercise balance, flexibility and trust.” Clients are given individualized treatment plans, and staff utilize evidence-based treatment methods to help clients develop life skills in support of lasting wellness.

McCallum Place was founded in 2002 by Dr. Kilmberli McCallum, a board-certified psychiatrist and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist (CEDS). Dr. McCallum is a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, received her medical degree from Yale University and is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Washington University.

McCallum Place is a member of the Acadia provider network, which operates an international group of treatment facilities throughout the United States and the United Kingdom.

Treatment and Staff

McCallum Place offers three levels of outpatient treatment, with separate tracks for adults and adolescents. In its Extended Partial-hospitalization Program (PHP), clients attend treatment from 9:30 am to 7:30 pm each day. All clients have supported meals and snacks while in treatment. The facilities, referred to as “therapy suites,” have art therapy rooms, movement/yoga rooms, dining rooms and a kitchen. The adolescent therapy suites also have a tutoring room with certified teachers.

In the Traditional PHP, clients attend treatment from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm each day, giving them an opportunity to practice eating breakfast and dinner at home. Clients have the same amenities as in the Extended PHP.

In the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients customize the hours they attend treatment. It’s suggested they attend six days a week when first entering the IOP and then step down to fewer treatment days as their recovery progresses.

The treatment team at McCallum Place includes physicians, dietitians, nutritionists, yoga therapists, nurses and Master’s-level therapists. On each track, clients attend therapy groups that use CBT, DBT and Family-Focused therapy. They also meet with a psychiatrist every other week to address co-occurring mental health issues and have a meeting with a registered dietician (RD) each week. Therapy with an MSW or LMFT is also part of each treatment plan. Additionally, the treatment team can arrange hospital care and primary care appointments for clients in need of medical intervention. Tube-feeding is also available.

McCallum Place also has a dedicated outpatient and residential treatment track for elite athletes, called The Victory Program. The Victory Program addresses healthy eating habits for athletes, the emotional pressures of competition and forming a positive relationship with exercise.

Extras

McCallum Place endeavors to involve family members at all levels of treatment. It hosts a monthly Family Day for eating disorder education as well as a weekly family group on Mondays.

McCallum Place invests significant time in aftercare planning for all clients. It regularly checks in with alumni to monitor their progress and offer encouragement. It recently started an Eating Disorders group, open to all, on Tuesdays and an Alumni Group on Thursdays—both in Webster Grove, Missouri. It also offers periodic educational webinars and community events to alumni.

Clients who do not live locally can find housing in McCallum’s transitional apartments complex in St. Louis.

In Summary

McCallum Place is a highly-regarded eating disorders treatment center with facilities throughout the state of Missouri. Its comprehensive and credentialed treatment team is equipped to support clients and their families at every stage of their disorder and provide long-term aftercare support once they’ve completed their treatment plan. Those struggling with co-occurring eating disorders and mental health diagnoses will find ample support.
