A and O Recovery Services Review

Located in Philadelphia, A and O Recovery Services offers a standard outpatient program run by a board of directors with years of experience treating addiction. Collectively, the directors have over 75 years of sobriety, all achieved through 12-step programs—as a result, A and O strongly encourages clients to do the same (though this isn’t strictly required). In general, clients receive individual and group therapy with support for co-occurring disorders.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at A and O is flexible, basic and available to all adults 18 and older struggling with chemical dependency and mental health disorders. After an initial assessment, each client gets assigned to a therapist who helps them develop a personalized treatment plan All A and O participants must agree to random alcohol and drug tests during the program.

Frequency of individual therapy and length of treatment varies from client to client, though a standard schedule consists of two individual therapy sessions a week for an hour and a half each (though more sessions can be arranged on an as-needed basis). If their therapists give permission, clients can also meet with them less frequently, though typically this only occurs when participants are paying out-of-pocket.

Along with individual therapy, clients can also choose to attend a group session every Wednesday night. An LADC leads each of these two hour-long sessions, discussing topics such as relapse prevention, coping skills, psychoeducation, communication skills, anger management, trauma processing, vocational goals, substance abuse awareness, and the disease model of addiction. Though the group session is not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged.

Participation in a 12-step program is not mandatory, though AA meetings are also strongly encouraged. There are no on-site meetings available but staff members can refer clients to local community meetings upon request.

Therapists are available for individual sessions Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. All therapists are trained in CBT and DBT, and clients with co-occurring disorders are offered dual diagnosis support and medication management when necessary. Doctors visit the facility on a monthly basis. Clients must make special requests to see the doctor through their therapist, who arranges an appointment.

In Summary

A and O Recovery Services is well-suited to adults seeking flexible outpatient care. Though the facility provides only the nuts and bolts of recovery, the use of evidence-based modalities like CBT and DBT in therapy sessions is a plus—and those having financial difficulties will appreciate the facility’s per-session pricing.
