The Basics

Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers were founded in 1983 by Dr. James Milam, author of the classic Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism, and Charles H. Kester, then head of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services for Seattle-King County. Milam and Kester created Lakeside to treat addiction according to two guiding principles: that addiction is a progressive and treatable disease, and that the education and support of the client’s family and friends are paramount to the success of long-term recovery.

The Foundations Program is a transitional care program for men. It’s operated at The Lodge, a rural home that sits on five acres near North Bend. Lakeside-Milam also operates a network of nine outpatient centers throughout Washington state as well as an inpatient program in Kirkland.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Lodge has six beds and residents have roommates. The home has ample grounds for walks and relaxing and clients can watch TV in the common area. For meals, they work in conjunction with staff to plan and create menus according to the residents’ needs and preferences.

Rules and Regulations

Men must have completed residential treatment in order to enroll in The Foundations Program. They must also pass a medical evaluation and background check as well as an interview that determines their motivation and ability to live communally.

Residents stay at The Lodge for 60 to 90 days. While in residence, they enroll in Lakeside-Milam’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at its nearby Issaquah clinic, where they attend group therapy each weekday for at least three hours and have and have individual therapy at least every other week.

In addition to their work at the IOP, Foundations provides daily life skills classes on budgeting, home upkeep and resume building. Residents are encouraged to do community service. They also create long-term goals for work and school and consult with their case manager on how to implement them. Foundations also requires residents to attend several 12-step meetings each week.

Therapy in the IOP uses CBT and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) to help clients identify triggers and develop coping and decision-making skills. Groups are run primarily by LCDCs. At The Lodge, behavioral health technicians are available for 24/7 support and supervision.

Lakeside-Milman does not specialize in dual diagnosis support; however, its medical director and staff psychiatrist consult on clients’ treatment plans and can make recommendations for further mental health treatment.

Extras

Staff take residents to a nearby gym several times a week for exercise. Clients work with their case managers to create aftercare plans that may include additional outpatient and sober living programs. Lakeside-Milman also hosts alumni events, such as its annual picnic.

Lakeside-Milam’s Tacoma, Renton and Kirkland locations also hold free intervention classes in which family and friends can learn how to effectively approach a loved one about seeking treatment.

In Summary

Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers Foundations Program provides long-term transitional care for men leaving residential treatment. With treatment groups provided by its nearby Issaquah outpatient clinic and extensive case management services, the program helps men take action on post-treatment goals while continuing to help them cultivate self-awareness and relapse prevention techniques.
