Athens Area Commencement Center Review
In 1978, the Athens Area Commencement Center alcohol and drug addiction recovery program opened in Athens, Georgia as part of Athens Regional Medical Center. AACC offers outpatient substance abuse treatment and individualized treatment plans to fit each client’s schedule and needs.
Treatment and Staff
AACC provides many levels of care, including ambulatory detox, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). All programs are outpatient, which allows clients to receive treatment at the facility during the day, returning to their own homes each night. Individuals receive an initial assessment to determine which level of care they need. Full treatment generally lasts for six weeks.
During the PHP process, clients attend meetings and groups six times a week, from 9 am to 3 pm, with the exception of Wednesday evenings when everyone attends the family program from 5 pm to 8 pm. After three weeks of initial treatment, there is a step-down option to IOP. With meetings four times a week in the evenings and Saturday mornings, clients can receive treatment while attending work or school. The IOP lasts approximately three weeks.
While in PHP, a typical day starts with a group education class, followed by lunch, and ends with a 12-step meeting. AACC follows the 12-step model and takes clients to off-site meetings daily. Clients can expect two group therapy meetings per day, at least one individual therapy session per week, and family therapy. AACC deploys an eclectic variety of therapy methods. Depending on the client, behavior modification methods like CBT and DBT are regularly used. In the family program, clients and their families come together for family group.
Overseen by a medical director, the small staff at AACC includes five counselors who are licensed Master’s-level social workers and certified addictions counselors. There are two nurses on staff at all times as well, and care is available 24 hours a day.
Extras
Guided meditation and relaxation time is offered on Saturdays, and the occasional art project or expressive therapy may be included in group sessions. The facility is also home to Bo, the therapy Golden Retriever, who is available every day to brighten the client’s experience.
In Summary
The staff at Athens Area Commencement Center wants their clients to succeed. They know that achieving life long sobriety is challenging, and offer support and education to assist in beginning the process. With extensive programs and ever-increasing therapy methods and services, AACC provides an environment conducive to change.
