The Basics

Located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Zephyrus of Santa Fe is a small behavioral health facility that provides flexible outpatient services for clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. It offers support for many disorders including anorexia, bulimia and compulsive overeating. While these programs are not designed for those in need of intensive psychiatric or medical supervision, they are open to adult men and women as well as adolescent boys and girls.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff determine their needs and treatment history. While on-site detox and stabilization services are not available, those in need can get referrals to nearby programs as necessary. While more flexible outpatient therapy may also be available, the organization’s main program is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which meets for three hours a day, three days a week.

IOP typically features group, individual and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. In addition to these clinical practices, the program also draws on holistic care methods including art therapy, Somatic Experiencing, movement therapy and yoga. Because eating is such a pivotal part of the program, clients also attend nutritional counseling and supervised meals with counselors to help them overcome any food-related triggers or problem foods. Basic dual diagnosis support is available for issues like anxiety, depression and some substance abuse issues; still, those in need of more thorough support should find additional help elsewhere. While 12-step recovery is not a required part of the program, it may be encouraged in some cases.

The staff at Zephyrus of Santa Fe consists of supervising physicians, LCSWs, Certified Eating Disorder Specialists (CEDS) and additional Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

While each program is individualized, groups can offer support for a range of issues that may be playing into a client’s eating disorder. Some of these issues may include domestic violence or abuse, underlying sexual abuse, family dysfunction, chronic pain or substance abuse. The organization also provides LGBTQ+ sensitive therapy as well. Those who complete a primary care plan can also work with the counselors to develop stepped down aftercare plans as necessary.

In Summary

In all, Zephyrus of Santa Fe provides fairly specialized services for clients with disordered eating. While the treatment available is not particularly medical or psychiatric in nature, it still provides a wide range of psychological support services for many different eating disorders. Treatment is evidence-based though it also includes holistic supports and individualized care planning. While anyone in need of more supervision or a more intensive program may want to seek additional aid elsewhere, Zephyrus of Santa Fe remains a strong and unique option for those in the area.
