Youth Focus Mell-Burton Review
Youth Focus is an adolescent behavioral health treatment program located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Its services include inpatient and outpatient mental health care, and substance abuse programming and transitional housing. Youth Focus also operates the Mell-Burton School, which is a private school for young people who struggle with moderate to severe mental health issues that prevent them from having success in regular school. Building Futures is a similar program for younger children in grades K-5. Students in this program can expect individualized care, group and individual therapy, and psychiatric support while continuing education in a safe and supportive setting.
Treatment and Staff
The Mell-Burton program offers students who are in the sixth grade up to 12th grade personalized treatment plans with a small student body. There are 16 students in all, and three teachers. The beginning part of the day, five days a week, participants are in the classroom. After lunch, clients attend group therapy, have recreation, and undergo individual sessions with their primary counselor.
Building Futures offers similar structure to the older students plans. However, this level of care offers lower intensity treatment and age-appropriate protocols.
To participate in this program the students need referrals from the school system. This typically requires an IEP after an evaluation performed through the district.
The counseling aspect of treatment uses evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). There are also expressive methods and recreational therapies, such as play therapy. Psychiatric support is available throughout the program, and the students have medication management as part of their individual care plans.
Mell-Burton and Building Futures are fully accredited. As a result, clients receive full academic credit that carries over to any school. It’s worth mentioning, Youth Focus provides transportation and meals during the school day.
Staff of these programs includes psychiatrists, nurses, LPCs, LCSWs, and a well rounded teaching staff.
In Summary
Both the Mell-Burton and Building Futures programs are unique in that they offer an alternative solution for children who are struggling with their day to day interactions due to their behavioral and mental health issues. It removes the kids from a stressful situation and places them in an environment that is able to accommodate their needs. Above all, it’s a safe and calming place to learn, which sets them up for success down the line.
