YMCA of HonoluluThe Basics

The YMCA of Honolulu was founded in 1869 in Honolulu, Hawaii, the capital of the state and the gateway to the U.S. island chain. Serving over 100,000 Hawaiian citizens a year in numerous capacities, the organization also offers adolescent outpatient services to middle and high school students struggling with substance abuse.

Treatment and Staff

Clients and families interested in the YMCA program begin the intake process by meeting with one of the organization’s local counselors, who is usually also associated with the potential client’s school. The YMCA offers treatment programs through Alea, Farmington, Kaliua, Kimuki, Roosevelt, Moanalau, Waipahu, Campell, Leilehau, Waialau, Kapolei, Nanakull and Waianae High Schools. YMCA also operates programs at the following middle schools: Aiea, Central, Dole, Jarrett, Ilima, Wailau, Wahiawa, Kalakau, Kawananakoa, Stevenson, Moanalua, Kapolei, Nanakuli and Waipahu. Young people who are in need of more comprehensive care are referred to outside residential treatment or detox facilities.

The treatment at all of the outpatient programs consists of both group and individual counseling. Clients attend at least two group sessions per week and one individual session per week, and stay in the program for as long as they need. The group meetings are anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. Although the group sizes vary, YMCA always aims for a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-four. Counselors focus on a variety of topics in the groups including life skills, decision making and anger management. They utilize CBT and also teach relapse prevention techniques. The YMCA does not implement 12-step recovery principles but still recommends clients attend outside AA and NA meetings in the community for additional support.

YMCA is not dual diagnosis so it must refer clients with potential co-occurring disorders to outside mental health providers.

All of the counselors at YMCA are CSACs.

Extras

Clients also participate in regular recreational therapy including bowling and hiking.

YMCA provides transportation to and from the group meetings and the client’s home if needed.

In Summary

YMCA of Honolulu offers affordable and dynamic outpatient treatment to adolescents in the Honolulu area. The recreational activities offer a fun and exciting shift from the traditional group meetings. The flexible length of programming is an added bonus. Additionally, the free cost makes help available to anyone who is ready and willing.
