The Basics
Word of Life Counseling Center is a Christian non-profit organization based in Wichita, Kansas which provides outpatient substance abuse treatment, marriage and family counseling, domestic violence classes and a host of other services. The facility is affiliated with the Word of Life Ministries and Schools, a non-denominational, non-profit organization that runs several churches and schools in the Wichita area. While this recovery program is faith-based, treatment also uses evidence-based methods including CBT and individual and group therapy.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program at Word of Life is basic, consisting of one group therapy session and one addiction support group each week. Clients can attend these sessions at one of three locations in the Wichita area, two of which are churches. The group sessions use CBT and are heavily influenced by AA’s 12 steps. These are held on Mondays from 11 am to 12:30 pm and Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm, each led by a LADC. The addiction support groups meet on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 pm and are more informal, led by a peer counselor. There is also an additional addiction support group on Saturdays from 5 to 6 pm. Word of Life also holds on-site 12-step meetings throughout the week.
It is worth noting that the additional support meetings are free of charge and clients only pay for group therapy on Mondays or Tuesdays. There are opportunities for clients to schedule individual therapy sessions as well, though these are not a standard feature of the treatment routine. Typically, clients follow this regimen for 12 weeks and then begin a period of aftercare, which involves attending one session per week at no cost for six weeks.
Due to the limited number of groups each week, Word of Life Counseling Center is not considered an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Because there is no medical team at Word of Life, those seeking dual diagnosis support or regular visits from physicians can be referred to another facility during intake. The same is true for those in need of detox.
Extras
In addition to outpatient substance abuse care, Word of Life also offers an extensive program of topic-specific counseling and educational classes. These include marriage and family therapy, an anger management and domestic violence course, a batterer’s intervention service, treatment for sexual addiction, court-mandated programs for sexual offenders, a separate parenting class, a Bible-specific life coaching class and a program specifically for pastors experiencing difficulties in their parish or personal life. These courses are all affordable and each one is held weekly.
In Summary
While Word of Life Counseling Center’s outpatient program may lack the intensity or time commitment of a more structured IOP, the programs offered are still wide-ranging. Though officially registered as “non-denominational,” Word of Life still offers a Christian-oriented program of recovery. Those in need of a religious recovery program would do well by looking into Word of Life.
