The Basics

Windhaven House offers women a nurturing and supportive sober living environment. The program is split between two beautiful houses in Dallas and Plano, Texas. Both locations require the clients to follow a structured, three-part phase system. Through the use of the 12 steps and routine accountability, the women are given the tools they need to maintain long-term sobriety.

Accommodations and Amenities

Windhaven House offers their program at two comfortable and spacious homes. The home in Plano, Texas includes a family room with a flat screen TV, fully equipped kitchen with marble countertops, dining area, two bedrooms, one with three beds, the other with two and two bathrooms. There is also a communication corner in the living area for house meetings where house rules and regulations are posted. A craft area and karaoke machine encouraged the women to have fun and spend time together. This house features an outdoor pool with beach lounge chairs for sunbathing and relaxing. Last but not least is the Windhaven House dog, Paris, who provides love and affection all day long.

The second Windhaven House is located in Dallas, Texas. This modern abode is very stylish and calming. It includes family room with wood floors, a comfy sofa and plenty of space for activities. There is a separate dining room area and the kitchen is fully equipped. The living room has an Apple flat screen TV, DVR, DVD player, board games, books, puzzles and karaoke machine. Bedroom number one has two bunk beds while bedroom number two has two twin-sized beds. There are two full bathrooms, one of which has two large sinks. Like the Plano residence, this home also has a communication corner where the ladies of the house can chat with one another. Windhaven loves furry friends, which is why the Dallas location also has a dog. You can find Ruby, the hypoallergenic golden doodle, playing fetch in the backyard with the women.

When it comes to meals, clients have access to a fully-stocked kitchen where they have the freedom to cook whatever they want. Clients are encouraged to collaborate with meal planning and cooking.

Rules and Regulations

The Windhaven House follows a three-phase system. Each phase has different rules and regulations that need to be followed. Residents have support from staff members 24/7. The staff is highly-credentialed and includes CADCs, MFTs and Master’s-level counseling interns, some of whom are also graduates from the Windhaven Program. Assistance towards finding employment,  education, financial planning and independent living planning are offered. Weekly individual and group therapy is included in the cost of stay. Dual diagnosis support and medication management is also available.

During the first phase, residents are not allowed to have contact with the outside world, including family. No cell phones, computers, IPods or mp3 players are permitted during this phase. They are required to find work or enroll in school in order to move through the first phase. The second phase requires participation in 12-step program. Residents must complete steps one through five with sponsor, be employed a minimum of 25 hours a week, surrender 30% of their first paycheck for collected wages and must open savings account. At this point, clients gain more privileges and can request to use their car or to ride the bus. By phase three, residents must have spent at least 45 days in phase two, completed all 12-steps, have an AA/NA service commitment and have $500 gathered in savings. After this last phase, the staff determines graduation eligibility. To graduate, clients must have $1,500 in savings, complete their budget plan to live independently, work all 12 steps and have commitment to a home group.

Extras

To spice up the week, there is a “Family Night” where the group gets to spend time together engaging in one of the many house actives. Occasional sober outings are also provided, as well. Since service is a huge part of the 12-step program, the staff and residents plan regular trips to the local homeless shelter. Windhaven also offers a family program. This includes group education and therapy sessions.

In Summary

Windhaven House is a perfect place for women to feel safe and supported as they reenter everyday life. The structure of the phase system offers a great roadmap to independent living and stable sobriety. This sober living is not for those who want autonomy from the very beginning or dislike dogs. However, for animal-lovers who aren’t opposed to a strict system and the 12 steps, it would be a great match.
