The Basics
The Wills-Knighton Health System is a hospital and wellness facility founded in 1924 and remains a locally owned and operated healthcare organization. Located in Shreveport, the third largest city in Louisiana, the behavioral medicine department of Wills-Knighton offers addiction recovery with an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
The IOP at Wills-Knighton is based on the Minnesota Model of Addiction and also integrates the 12 steps into treatment. Clients meet for group therapy Mondays through Thursdays between 5 and 9 pm and on Saturdays from 9 am to noon. Family groups are scheduled Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 pm, Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to noon. Clients are also required to attend two AA/NA meetings per week with attendance signed off by a sponsor or meeting secretary. Clients are also scheduled for individual therapy to work through personal goals or for treatment for co-occurring disorders.
Clients are also randomly administered urine or breathalyzer tests at least three times a week. The program typically lasts four to six weeks and is subject to change depending on the severity of the addiction.
The staff at WKHS consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LPCs and LCDCs.
Extras
As WKHS is a hospital and healthcare organization, a comprehensive range of other services and programs are available. Other programs include a cancer center, children’s services, diabetes care, emergency care, eye care, heart and vascular care, imaging, occupational medicine, orthopedics, sport’s medicine and women’s services.
Once treatment is completed, clients are encouraged to continue with aftercare, which meets every week for an hour and a half for the following year.

By integrating the Minnesota Model of Addiction with the 12-steps through traditional therapy and other treatment modalities, clients are given a well-rounded base for recovery.
