William S Middleton Veterans Hospital Addictive Disorders Treatment ProgramThe Basics

William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital Addictive Disorders Treatment Program was founded in 1951 in Madison, Wisconsin. The hospital organization offers outpatient counseling to adult veterans living in the area and registered with the hospital. It also operates treatment facilities in Madison’s surrounding communities including Rockford, Freeport, Baraboo, Beaver Dam and Janesville.

Treatment and Staff

To be eligible for the VA’s services, clients must initially be a veteran and an active patient at the hospital. Clients begin the treatment process at the VA with an in-person assessment with one of the VA’s counselors. During this meeting, the counselor and client discuss the client’s substance abuse history and determine the needed level of care. If the client is deemed a good fit for the VA, the counselor helps determine a treatment plan for them at the hospital. Detox is not included in the outpatient program.

The outpatient treatment at all of the VA’s locations is the same with the exception of Rockford, which also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The treatment consists of both group and individual counseling. The treatment’s length and intensity is based on the needs of the client, with most clients in the outpatient program attending one to three groups per week, and the clients in the IOP attending three to five groups per week. The group sizes are generally small and range from five to 15 clients. Counselors aim to address each client’s individual needs in the meetings and use education, sharing, relapse prevention and some CBT. Individual sessions are scheduled based on the needs of the client.

Although the VA is not 12-step based, counselors do recommend clients to local AA and NA meetings to supplement their treatment.

The VA is dual diagnosis and offers individual sessions with a mental health counselor for clients with potential co-occurring disorders. The organization also offers medication management to clients with prescribed medication.

The counselors at the VA are LCSWs.

Extras

The VA offers individual meetings with the counselor, client and their family members. However, these meetings are only offered based on the consent of the client. These meetings aim to address family issues that lead to the clients substance abuse and aim to establish healthy communication practices in the family.

The organization also operates a Suboxone program for clients experiencing opiate and alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

In Summary

William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital Addictive Disorders Treatment Program offers highly affordable outpatient treatment for veterans in Madison and surrounding areas. The variety of locations allows clients to attend treatment relatively close to where they live. The medication management and dual diagnosis aspects of the treatment provide a high level of support for clients with co-occurring disorders. Also, free costs of attending the program allows Veterans of all economic backgrounds the opportunity to attend.
