The Basics
Founded in 2013 in Prescott, Arizona, by two brothers, Jory and Jay Wisocki, who both boast long-term recovery, Wilderness First Recovery combines structured male-only sober living with adventure therapy. The program’s philosophy is that a connection to nature provides powerful healing from alcoholism and addiction. By participating in wilderness-based activities, including kayaking, camping and rock climbing, clients become empowered and learn to be in control of their own recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
The home base for Wilderness First sits on 16 acres, the huge house appears to emerge out granite boulders. A seasonal waterfall runs throughout the property. Surrounded by trees, the A-frame house includes a pitch gabled roof, immense gothic-style windows, a rock chimney and a veranda held up by sturdy log columns. The rustic interior includes a unique log staircase, tiled floors and a fully equipped kitchen that features a tree growing out of the floor and through the roof. Additionally, there is a covered deck that overlooks tree-covered ravines.
At Wilderness First Recovery, eight men are accommodated. Four clients share a spacious furnished master suite, which includes a master bathroom and fireplace. The remaining clients are paired in rooms, which include full-sized beds, large dressers and lamps. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV, a basketball court and a hot tub. Groceries are purchased for the entire house, and clients prepare their own meals. Co-founder Jory Wisocki lives on the premises.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety and have completed a residential treatment, but find that they are not ready for day-to-day life. A three-month minimum length of stay is required and, during that time, clients are not permitted to work or drive vehicles. The typical length of stay is six months, but many residents stay longer.
The men are required to engage in a plethora of outdoor activities, including a five to seven-day monthly backpacking excursion, kayaking by a waterfall, rock climbing, camping and canyon hikes. When clients are not experiencing the great outdoors, they must adhere to other rules which include attending 12-step meetings, maintaining an active relationship with a sponsor, working the steps, performing basic household chores and participating in local community service. A zero tolerance policy is in place. Residents who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises to ensure the safety of the entire household.
Extras
Both brothers are certified in First Aid/CPR, and are wilderness specialists. Jory is working towards his wilderness first responder certification and is a drug and alcohol 12-step mentor specialist.

This unique sober living home provides an amazing opportunity for clients to engage in adventure therapy while connecting with sober men. Wilderness First Recovery is perfect for clients who have not found what they are looking for at a traditional drug rehab. Additionally, they should be physically prepared to embark on great adventures. Perhaps, at some point, the Wisocki brothers will open a similar facility that caters to women.
