The Basics

Founded in 1994, Westminster Free Clinic provides care for the uninsured of East Ventura County, California. Westminster Free Clinic (WFC) is the operational branch of the non-profit Westminster Community Care Center and serves residents of the cities of Thousand Oaks, Newbury Park, Westlake Village, Oak Park, Moorpark, Simi Valley, Camarillo and Fillmore.

WFC is a grass-roots health care provider that is completely funded and staffed by donations and volunteers. It offers basic non-invasive health care and mental health support services. While there are no stand-alone substance abuse treatment programs provided, those struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders are welcome. Group, family and individual counseling are provided along with referrals to free or low-cost treatment resources and peer support groups.

Treatment and Staff

Following an initial assessment, adults seeking outpatient mental health and addiction counseling receive a treatment schedule individualized to fit their specific needs. Plans can combine individual, group and family therapy. Clinic hours take place Wednesday evenings between the hours of 5 and 10 pm at both locations.

All therapists are volunteers who work at WFC after their regular jobs, so qualifications vary widely. They are trained in evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Programs are 12-step friendly, with referrals provided for local AA/NA meetings. As clients progress through their program, relapse prevention groups are offered. Duration of treatment varies as each schedule depends on the client’s needs.

Westminster Free Clinic provides all services in both English and Spanish. The staff includes over 100 volunteer employees, among them are MDs, nurses, CADCs, LMFTs, LCSWs and other therapists.

Extras

Additional services include basic health care, nutrition, HIV education and prevention classes, tobacco cessation classes, parenting groups, health education and stress management groups.

For young people interested in getting into the medical field, WFC also offers a two-year teen healthcare volunteer and internship program that provides future doctors, nurses and medical professionals with valuable job skills while serving the community.

In Summary

Overall, Westminster Free Clinic is an experienced non-profit treatment program with a continuum of care for clients in need. Its services are designed to be sensitive to a diverse community, with accommodations made for Spanish speakers. Westminster Free Clinic a valuable local resource and solid option for free mental health care in East Ventura County.
