The Basics
Wellspace Health, formerly known as The Effort, has provided comprehensive health care for behavioral health, substance abuse and co-occurring disorders since 1953. This outpatient facility provides low- to no-cost treatment to clients in Sacramento, California with evidence based group and individual therapy programs.
Treatment and Staff
The Wellspace model treats using a combination of talk therapy and medical care. All clients undergo an initial assessment to determine the level of care most appropriate for their needs. Outpatient treatment takes place at either the The J Street Community Health Center, which serves as the facility’s headquarters, or at South Valley Community Health Center in South Sacramento. Both locations provide extensive services including group and individual therapy as well as medication management.
All treatment is evidence based and incorporates elements of the 12 steps. The number of individual and group therapy sessions each client must attend is individualized. There are group sessions available in the evenings and individual sessions can be scheduled daily. Clients typically attend between one and three group sessions each week and two monthly individual sessions. Referrals to AA/NA meetings are available and clients are encouraged to attend at least three a week, though this is not strictly required. Therapy modalities and topics include CBT, behavioral modification, relapse prevention, anger management and parenting skills.
There are many behavioral health and addiction counselors overseeing the programming at Wellspace Health, among them CADCs, on-site psychiatrists, LCSWs, psychiatric nurses and medical staff.
Extras
In addition to the more structured services mentioned above, family therapy services are also available. Outreach programs for HIV education are provided as well, as are Spanish language programs when necessary. Drug-court appointed clients are welcome to attend as well as those self-referred. Intervention services can be arranged upon request.
Wellspace also operates the only 24-hour suicide crisis line in the area, as well as a 24-hour parenting support line.
In Summary
Regardless of a client’s financial situation, Wellspace Health provides basic outpatient services with some limited support for co-occurring disorders as well. The facility offers a range of services from several locations and has been an asset to the community through their outreach programs for over 50 years. In all, those with financial limitations who are in need of general outpatient care will be well-served by Wellspace Health’s continuum of services.
