VA Northern California Health System provides US veterans with outpatient substance abuse treatment through its Addiction and Recovery Treatment Services (ARTS) program at its Mather, California facility—located 20 miles west of Sacramento. ARTS has been in operation since the 1990s and also refers clients to local detox facilities and regional inpatient VA substance abuse programs.

Treatment and Staff

Clients may call the facility to schedule an assessment appointment or walk in during regular business hours. Once evaluated, clients will be placed in detox, referred to a VA inpatient program or enrolled in the ARTS program.

ARTS has three phases of outpatient treatment which incorporate individual and group therapy. Phase One consists of eight therapy groups. Phases Two and Three consist of 16 therapy groups each. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed in each phase. The treatment team—which includes MSWs, California Consortium Addiction Program Professionals (CCAPPs) and psychologists—is well-equipped to treat co-occurring disorders. Clients also have access to psychiatric services in the facility’s mental health department, including medication management and cognitive treatment for PTSD.

Therapy uses CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). The treatment team also encourages clients to attend peer support meetings such as AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery and it hosts 12-step facilitated groups on-site.

ARTS also provides Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone for clients battling opioid addiction.

Extras

Clients are encouraged to bring loved ones to individual therapy for family counseling. Once clients have completed their treatment plan, they’re encouraged to attend ARTS aftercare groups, which are scheduled twice each week.
