The Basics
For over 20 years, the Utah’s Ute Indian Tribe has provided culturally-sensitive outpatient treatment for tribal members in a clinic adjacent to its Red Pine Residential Treatment Center. Headquartered in Fort Duchesne, the Ute reside in northeastern Utah on over four million acres of land.
Non-tribe members can access residential treatment for an additional fee, and the outpatient clinic is currently working on creating the same opportunity for local residents. Currently, outpatient services are reserved for those who qualify for services from the Indian Health Service (IHS).
Treatment and Staff
Red Pine provides outpatient services at the standard outpatient level of care. Clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed, usually once a week. Treatment plans typically range from four to six weeks up to between 14 and 16 weeks, depending on the client’s needs, progress and attendance.
The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists—such as LCSWs and LMHCs—who use a CBT-based curriculum that includes Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). Therapists can treat co-occurring disorders but refer patients who need significant mental health treatment to the Indian Health Service for additional therapy and medication.
Red Pine also offers a Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) group and suggests clients attend on-site Wellbriety or local AA/NA meetings at least twice a week.
Extras
The Ute Indian Tribe has a Diabetes clinic on the reservations as well. As clients near the end of their outpatient treatment plan, their counselor works with them to create a customized aftercare plan likely to include on-going one-on-one therapy and peer support meetings.
In Summary
For two decades, the Ute Indian Tribe’s Red Pine Treatment Center has been building its outpatient treatment center to provide effective services to both new clients and those stepping down from its residential program. Treatment plans are rich with well-tested evidence-based practices and culturally-sensitive peer support activities, giving clients the knowledge of how addiction impacts their lives and how to build a new life without it.
