Salt Lake City UtahThe Basics

University of Utah Healthcare is the largest academic healthcare provider in the Intermountain West region of Utah, also serving residents of four neighboring states. Its University Neuropsychiatric Institute (UNI) offers treatment in the forms of a short-term inpatient detox facility and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). UNI has been providing substance abuse treatment for over 20 years and integrates this treatment with the University’s psychiatric hospital in order to offer clients extensive dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Recovery Works, UNI’s traditional IOP, has treatment plans that consist of 32 sessions of group therapy. Clients attend groups four evenings each week and have individual therapy as-needed. Most clients complete their treatment plan in eight weeks, though some may take longer depending upon attendance.

At present, three tracks are available within the framework of the IOP: one for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 and two for adults aged 26 and older. The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists such as LCSWs, expressive therapists and Substance Abuse Counselors (SACs). Groups use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT). Groups also teach mindfulness and each Wednesday clients engage in experiential therapy such as on-site ROPES therapy, equine therapy and music and art therapy.

UNI asks clients to attend at least one peer support recovery meeting each week. Clients can attend the meeting of their choice, whether a 12-step, SMART Recovery, Celebrate Recovery or other faith-based meetings.

Recovery Clinic is UNI’s dual-diagnosis track. In this program, clients also attend treatment at the IOP level and have additional therapy and medication-managed treatment with UNI’s psychiatrist and nurse practitioners. The Recovery Clinic provides opiate addicts with Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using Suboxone.

Extras

Families of IOP clients are required to attend a weekly Tuesday night family group for emotional processing and addiction education. They can also attend a weekly Thursday evening group for additional family peer recovery support.

For aftercare, clients can continue to attend a weekly relapse prevention group and take advantage of alumni social and educational events.

In Summary

University of Utah Healthcare’s University Neuropsychiatric Institute provides outpatient treatment with extensive dual diagnosis support and experiential therapy components. Its treatment team of addiction psychiatrists, credentialed counselors and expressive therapists ensures that clients have access to the most up-to-date evidence-based addictions treatment alongside experimental modalities that might help them to see their addiction and recovery in a new light.
