The Basics

Located in northern Orange County in the city of Fullerton, California, Turning Point Counseling is a treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with depression, marital conflicts and stressful life events. Turning Point provides faith-based counseling on the outpatient level. It was founded in 1983 by Dr. Peter Robbins and Dr. Kevin Downing, after the two realized the need for faith-based therapy following their years acting as youth pastors. Well known in the Southern California area, the co-founders hosted the Journey of the Heart radio show for nine years. Turning Point has over 40 locations throughout Southern California including Alhambra, Anaheim, Glendale, Whittier and Rancho Cucamonga. Turning Point primarily offers outpatient counseling services. Medication management and 12-step recovery are not components of the programming.

Treatment and Staff

The overall goal of Turning Point is to foster “emotional, relational and spiritual health” by providing “tender help for tough problems” through Christ-centered professional counseling. The facility offers treatment for a wide range of personal, familial and marital issues including withdrawal, domestic abuse, depression, decreased sexual energy as well as major life crises like the death of a loved one, job loss or divorce. Clients new to Turning Point begin with an assessment to help the staff determine the most effective treatment program to meet their specific needs. While the length of treatment varies depending on the needs of the client, the typical therapy session lasts between 45 and 50 minutes.

Turning Point offers professional Christ-centered counseling. The facility integrates biblical principles, prayer and scripture into psychotherapy. While Turning Point specializes in marriage, family and individual therapy, the facility also offers counseling for anger management, substance use and eating disorders as well as learning disorders for children and adolescents. In addition, the facility takes on court ordered cases, though on a case by case basis.

The Turning Point team is comprised of LMFTs, a clinical psychologist and several interns. The facility does not employ a psychiatrist and cannot offer medication management.

Extras

Clients can pay for counseling visits on the website. Turning Point can offer a sliding scale fee structure based on the client’s combined gross household income and number of dependents. In addition, therapists can provide a superbill for insurance submission.
