Trauma Counseling Center of Los Angeles was founded by Dr. Deborah Sweet, a psychologist who has been in practice for over 10 years. Dr. Sweet and her team of clinicians implement the newest and most proven therapeutic modalities for the treatment of trauma, including EMDR and Brainspotting.
The Trauma Counseling Center is effective at treating adults who are dealing with both long-term effects of trauma, such as those stemming from child abuse, and those from events in the recent past, such as car accidents. Dr. Sweet has been in recovery for over 30 years and she and her clinical staff are expert at helping clients understand how trauma impacts addiction. They are experienced in creating an effective aftercare plans following clients’ participation in residential or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that is usually comprised of individual therapy one or more times each week. Because trauma therapy is highly individualized, group and family/couples therapy is usually not included. Trauma Counseling does, however, strongly believe in the power of peer support in healing from addiction and compulsive behaviors, and it encourages clients to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings in addition to therapy.
Trauma Counseling believes that we store memories of trauma in our bodies, which is why CBT and traditional talk therapy, while helpful, cannot alone heal clients’ pain. Each clinician is trained in cutting-edge modalities specifically aimed at targeting the physical and subconscious storage of traumatic experiences. These modalities include EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing and Havening.
In addition to Dr. Sweet, Trauma Counseling’s treatment team includes LMFTs and MFT-Is with expertise in addiction, family systems and depression and anxiety. Therapists are skilled at both healing the memories of trauma and helping clients examine how those experiences have impacted their present lives. The team offers coordinated care with clients’ psychiatrists and refers clients in need of a higher level of treatment to nearby residential and outpatient programs.
Trauma Counseling Center believes that ongoing individual therapeutic support is a key component of success following residential treatment or an IOP for substance abuse. Its staff is especially skilled at helping clients implement their treatment goals in their new lives in recovery.
The Trauma Counseling Center of Los Angeles is devoted to helping clients address the deep-seated issues that underlie addiction and self-defeating and compulsive behaviors. With compassionate understanding and experience practicing multiple trauma-focused therapies, its clinicians are able to facilitate resolutions to long-standing obstacles, frustration and pain.
