The Basics

Western Australia’s The Swan Centre is an eating disorder treatment facility that specializes in providing evidence-based programming to help people struggling with anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorders and other forms of the disease. The Swan Centre got its name from Dr. Susan Byrne, who also is the facility’s clinical director, who had a research study known as Strong Without Anorexia Nervosa (SWAN) Study.

Treatment and Staff

The assessment appointment prior to receiving treatment is performed by an eating disorder counselor, and from this appointment clients are placed into the program. Treatment at the SWAN Centre lasts between three and 10 months with clients attending 10 to 20 therapy sessions. Counseling is usually in an individual setting, though there are couples and family therapy options. There are also, in certain circumstances, group sessions available. The hour long sessions cover topics that are individualized to the client’s particular needs.

As previously mentioned, treatment is primarily evidence-based and includes Enhanced CBT, or CBT-E, which focuses on behavioral modification and addressing the core issues revolving around the eating disorder, and helps clients feel less stuck in their habits and patterns. Other methods are the Maudsley Model, or MANTRA, to address how a person thinks about food and begins to adjust a client’s view of food and their bodies. MANTRA is often used with workbooks and requires personal assignments. Additional therapeutic methods are Family Based Treatment (MBT), which is the most effective when applied to younger clients, and exposure therapy. These therapies also encompass body dysmorphia, obsessive dieting, over exercising and emotional eating.

Since the SWAN Centre is an outpatient facility, all clients have to maintain regular correspondence with their general practitioner throughout treatment. Clients are also asked to allow for staff to communicate with other medical teams so as to coordinate their healthcare.

The staff is comprised of seven people, all of whom are Master’s-level therapists who specialize in eating disorders, psychiatrists and a dietitian.

Extras

Some additional services that are offered at The SWAN Centre include a program for those who care for loved ones with eating disorders. There are sessions offered that specifically work on communication and self care.

There are also programs for those who want to be a health care provider for clients with eating disorders. The Swan Centre holds trainings regulalary.

In Summary

The Swan Centre offers care that is backed by science and is provided by compassionate, experienced professionals who have dedicated their lives to helping others with eating disorders. The additional programming offered to family and loved ones is also a valuable asset. Those seeking flexible but comprehensive help with eating disorder issues in Western Australia might find a great resource in The Swan Centre.
