The Basics

Minnesota’s The Emily Program operates several outpatient treatment facilities for both adolescents and adults. Locations are in Duluth, St. Louis Park, St. Paul, and provide comprehensive treatment services for both males and females who are struggling with eating disorders along with mental health concerns and substance abuse. Programming implements evidence- and strength-based modalities and some holistic approaches, all of which are individualized. The outpatient tracks are an ideal step-down from the residential treatment offered through The Emily Program, and there are also lodging options for those who wish to stay in a structured living environment while participating in outpatient care.

Treatment and Staff

Depending on what the initial assessment determines, there are some clients who go to outpatient without needing the initial residential care. Since all the programs are personalized to suit each client’s needs, there isn’t a set amount of time that they are expected to remain in treatment, though usually when it comes to eating disorders it’s over 30 days. Depending on how intensive of an outpatient treatment is needed, there is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)— both of which often include the partial lodging, though that is certainly not required. Clients can absolutely live at home and partake in the outpatient programs. There is also a standard outpatient program that requires a minimal amount of time in therapy.

These outpatient tracks for adults and adolescents (up to the age of 18) include regular group and individual therapy, nutritional education and regular meetings with a psychiatrist to address any mental health issues. If needed, medication management can be facilitated.

Minnesota programs offer a variety of group sessions throughout the week in the outpatient track that are scheduled throughout the day in order to be as convenient as possible to accommodate client’s personal lives. These groups include a therapeutic meals, social anxiety groups, body image groups, LGBTQ focused groups and life skills groups.

Treatment approaches include CBT, DBT, EMDR, trauma-informed care, relapse prevention, psychoeducation and coping skills. Each client works with their therapist on personal goals and treatment milestones to assess their achievements during every step of treatment. The adolescent tracks also integrate the Family Systems method into their programming.

The Emily Program offers in-person and telehealth services for intensive outpatient and intensive day/partial hospitalization programs. Outpatient treatment is currently available via telehealth.

Staff of the Minnesota outpatient programs are operated by LPCs, LCSWs, psychiatrists and psychologists.

Extras

Additionally there are some holistic and expressive therapies employed like art and music therapy, and movement therapy. Family and couples therapy is available to all clients and their loved ones. There are also outpatient programs available in Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
