The Basics
The Chicago Center for Evidence Based Treatment was founded two years ago by Kristen Anderson, LCSW, who also serves as the Clinical Director of the University of Chicago Eating Disorders Program. CCEBT believes that eating disorder treatment is best facilitated by involvement from the entire family, and it encourages parents and spouses of its clients to take an active role in counseling and other recovery activities.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes individual therapy once or twice each week. Clients struggling with anorexia and bulimia are also encouraged to schedule family therapy at least once a week. The length of treatment varies by individual, but most clients’ treatment plans last six to 12 months.
The treatment team at CCEBT includes PsyDs and LCSWs who used Family-Based Therapy (FBT) and Adolescent-Focused Therapy (AFT). Adult clients also learn CBT skills in their individual sessions.
CCEBT has strong relationships with other treatment facilities in the area. It provides coordinated care with clients’ psychiatrists for dual diagnosis support and medication management for eating disorders. It also refers clients to primary care doctors and hospitals if their physical health becomes increasingly unstable.
Extras
Once a month, CCEBT holds a family night for clients, parents of clients and alumni to have further education and support. CCEBT also provides counseling support for before and after weight loss surgery. CCEBT is in the planning stages of creating an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for eating disorders, which would include structured group therapy several times each week.
In Summary
Chicago Center for Evidence Based Treatment provides targeted individual and family therapy for individuals suffering from eating disorders and undergoing weight loss surgery. Its clinicians are well-trained in treating the fractured family systems that may contribute to the disorders and be further damaged by them. By offering a monthly family group for clients and alumni, the center ensures that clients have an on-going source of support as they progress in recovery.
