The Basics

Based out of Columbus, Ohio, The Center for Balanced Living is a CARF-accredited behavioral health facility that offers flexible, outpatient-based treatment programs to clients struggling with eating disorders and related behavioral health issues. The organization was founded in 2000 and remains the only standalone non-profit in Ohio to offer specialized treatment for eating disorders. Care plans are available in many intensities including outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

Treatment and Staff

Every incoming client undergoes an initial intake and assessment to help the staff determine his or her needs. As an outpatient facility, on-site medical stabilization and detox services are not available. While the standard outpatient plans are flexible and can suit most schedules, IOP meets for 11 hours a week on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings (though Saturday morning sessions also available).

Treatment consists of individual, group and family therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. Dual diagnosis support and medication management are also available as needed. In addition to the clinical approach, clients also attend nutritional classes, life skills groups and supervised dining sessions. While 12-step recovery is not strictly required, referrals to nearby meetings are available and other on-site self-help groups are held on a rotating basis.

The staff at Center for Balanced Living consists of psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, LCSWs, dietitians, LPCs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.

Extras

Those seeking a shorter-term program can also attend the organization’s five-day intensive program for eating disorders; it uses much of the same therapeutic practices at an accelerated rate. These programs are typically held once a month. Family support groups are available as well. Those who complete a primary care regimen can also work with staff members to develop stepped down aftercare plans as necessary. Programs are open to both males and females ages 16 and up.

In Summary

Overall, The Center for Balanced Living offers well-rounded program to male and female teens alike. Treatment plans include evidence-based treatment practices as well as nutritional counseling and psychiatric oversight as well. All care plans are relatively flexible and teach important life skills in addition to clinical therapy. While the cost of these programs may vary by insurance and treatment specifics, The Center for Balanced Living remains a strong resource for teens in the area.
