The Basics

Located minutes away from Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois, The Awakening Center is an outpatient facility that treats male and female adults, adolescents and children struggling with eating disorders as well as co-occurring mental illnesses. Founded in 1994, Awakening seeks to uncover the root causes of the client’s conditions rather than simply treating symptoms. It facilitates individualized treatment programming with step-up and step-down options. The integrative treatment approach employs an array of therapeutic methods including nutrition consultations, individual and group therapy, support groups, holistic solutions and evidence-based models. The Awakening Center primarily offers outpatient therapeutic services. Twelve-step recovery and medication management are not components of the programming.

Treatment and Staff

The Awakening Center treats clients with a range of eating disorders like anorexia, compulsive eating and bulimia as well as individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental conditions such as trauma, anxiety and depression. In addition, therapists treat people struggling with difficult life transitions and relationship difficulties. Before beginning care, clients undergo an extensive evaluation to help the team determine the best possible personalized treatment plan. While Awakenings does not offer residential care, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), it does provide individualized plans that can be tapered down or intensified accordingly for clients at various points in recovery.

Awakening Center implements an multifaceted approach to treatment that utilizes holistic methods, focus groups and evidence-based practices. Clients engage in individual sessions rooted in CBT, DBT and EMDR. The facility has both committed therapy groups and affordable drop-in support groups. Support groups are typically attended by between six and 14 clients, with family and friends welcome as well. Groups introduce a variety of therapies including creative expression, mindfulness, yoga and DBT as well as the innovative virtual reality therapy to teach relaxation procedures. Regular one-day workshops are also available to emphasize elements of spiritual wellness, aggression, body image and nutrition.

The Awakening Center employs a multidisciplinary team of LPCs, registered dieticians, nutritionists and social workers.

Extras

In addition to eating disorder programming, Awakening Center provides discernment counseling for couples on varying attitudes towards the relationship. Contrary to traditional couples or marriage counseling, discernment counseling is a short-term, practical, straightforward approach to treatment where the individuals are counseled separately to better determine personal agendas and expectations. From there, the facility offers an honest assessment as to whether problems can be solved at all, and if so the potential solutions available.

In Summary

Since 1994, The Awakening Center has provided individualized outpatient treatment services for men, women, adolescents and children struggling with a range of eating disorders like compulsive overeating, binge eating and anorexia. In addition, the facility offers care for individuals with co-occurring mental conditions like anxiety, OCD, trauma, depression and substance use disorder. While Awakening Center does not offer PHP or IOP, the facility employs flexible step-up and step-down plans tailored to the specific needs and goals of the individual. For clients seeking personalized, comprehensive care with an extensive, devoted team and plenty of programming options, The Awakening Center is a great option.
