Summit Malibu Review
Founded in 2011, Summit is one of the newer additions to Malibu’s array of small, ritzy, holistic rehab centers. Personal treatment is stellar here. The facility sits on three acres and houses a maximum of seven residents at a time.
Accommodations and Food
While the Spanish-style residence offers views of the Pacific, the facility resembles more of an actual home than the resort-like look of comparably priced rehabs; additionally, not all the rooms have views of the ocean. Still, the space is bright and airy. Chefs serve customized meals in the communal dining room and coffee and snacks are always on hand.
Treatment and Staff
Summit offers the now-standard treatment for these types of places: a psychiatric and physical evaluation upon entry, supervised detox, CBT, DBT, EEG biofeedback, family therapy, life skills and communication training, relapse prevention counseling, education and experiential groups and the option to attend 12-step meetings and yoga. In addition to drug and alcohol addiction, Summit also treats co-occurring disorders (often diagnosed at the start of treatment) such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. The monthly Comprehensive Family Weekend Program invites residents’ family and friends to participate in their recovery experience. Outpatient and aftercare programs are also part of the process. In order to keep the focus on treatment, clients are only allowed to use computers and cell phones during designated times and all electronics are confiscated every night.
Also of note is that Summit’s co-founder, William Oswald, was also “instrumental in creating Cocaine Anonymous,” according to his bio. In compliance with the 12-step philosophy, Summit helps clients pick AA sponsors during their aftercare program; still, not all of Summit’s counselors are in 100% agreement with AA’s approach to recovery.
Summit favors individual treatment, and the staff’s hospitality and friendliness earn praise from former residents. It’s also not owned by a treatment conglomerate like other luxury rehabs and seems to have a certain authenticity as a result.
Extras
Residents can swim in the pool, hike local trails, hit the fitness center, or even get manicures.
In Summary
At $48,000 for 28 days in a shared room, Summit will put a dent in any budget. Still, it’s a lovely place to get sober with a focus on individualized treatment and a balanced approach to the 12 steps.
