The Basics
Based out of New Haven, Connecticut, The Substance Abuse Treatment Unit (SATU) is a division of the Connecticut Mental Health Center offered in cooperation with Yale University’s School of Medicine’s psychiatry department. The facility provides flexible and affordable outpatient treatment for clients in recovery from addiction and co-occurring disorders.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, all clients go through an initial intake and assessment to help staff members develop their individualized treatment plans. While the specifics of each plan may vary, all generally consist of both individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based psychotherapy, such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). Groups cover a range of topics including relapse prevention, spirituality, addiction education and gender-specific issues. Clients also attend groups that discuss the 12-step recovery philosophy as part of treatment. Dual diagnosis support and medication management are available; however, detox is not offered.
The staff at SATU consists primarily of MDs, psychologists and psychiatrists who are trained in substance abuse issues.
Extras
In addition to the above, SATU also offers psychiatric assessments, bilingual therapy and family therapy as needed. Some holistic care is offered, such as auricular acupuncture.
Clients in need of aftercare can continue attending therapy at a stepped-down rate or receive a referral to an outside program.
