Stonecrest Center Review

Detroit, Michigan’s Stonecrest Center is a comprehensive treatment facility that is dedicated to helping adolescents, adults and seniors who are experiencing a mental health crisis; have a dual diagnosis such as addiction and depression; have a developmental disability or a condition like Alzheimer’s. Adult and senior inpatient care includes a variety of group therapy sessions using evidence-based approaches, holistic techniques and medication management.

Accommodations and Food

The adult and senior sections of the facility take up two thirds of the 133 beds, with these age groups being separated from the adolescent wing and themselves. The clients all share bedrooms with one other person and have common areas throughout the facility. This includes a dining room, cafeteria, outdoor recreational space, art and music rooms, and treatment rooms.

All the meals are prepared on-site and served in the cafeteria, though there are cases where the clients have their meals in their rooms. The meals are pre-planned, so clients don’t have much of a choice in food items, though there are some adjustments that can be made for restrictions or allergies.

Treatment and Staff

Stonecrest Center treats a variety of mental illness concerns including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and more. Depending on their condition at admission, there are some cases where a client has to be medicated and stabilized prior to attending any sort of counseling session. Clients are assigned a primary therapist who puts together their treatment plans, and after about 48 hours see the staff psychiatrist in order to facilitate medication management.

Participants in the senior program, which is referred to as the Generations Program, engage in individual therapy, recreational therapy, and daily activities that are calming and supportive. This program in particular relies on family member involvement during their loved one’s treatment. Families receive regular updates throughout the client’s stay.

Programming approaches include CBT, DBT, and expressive methods such as art and music therapy. There is also a specialty program that integrates Pet Assisted Therapy. Each track is customized for each client’s needs, so their length of stay can be a few days to a couple of months. At the end stages of their treatment, clients work with their therapists to put together a thorough aftercare plan.

Stonecrest Center staff includes medical doctors, psychiatrists, nurses, LPCs and LCSWs. Since programming here is primarily directed toward mental health and psychiatric issues, 12-step is not facilitated.

Extras

There are recreational therapy options for the adults and seniors including exercise and meditation. Family therapy is offered to all loved ones of clients.

In Summary

The adult and senior programs at Stonecrest are designed to help the clients stabilize and re-enter their communities as smoothly as possible. Stonecrest Center has had some controversial moments in the past but is adamant about its passion for helping men and women recover, and providing them with the essential skills to do so. With a variety of therapies and substantial resources for families, this is a pretty solid resource for the Detroit community at large.
