The Basics
Founded in 2006 in Orlando, Florida, Specialized Treatment Education and Prevention Services, referred to as STEPS, is a private, non-profit organization that provides little to no cost substance abuse and addiction outpatient treatment for financially-challenged alcoholics and addicts with co-occurring disorders. Besides its three facilities in Orlando, STEPS operates five additional locations throughout central Florida, including Casselberry, Cocoa, Melbourne, Palm Bay and Apopka.
Treatment and Staff
Priority is given to indigent, active addicts, including pregnant and postpartum females and women with small children. Potential clients undergo comprehensive assessments and are provided with individualized treatment plans. Clients in need of medical detox are referred to Aspire Health Partners or Bridges of America, both in Orlando.
STEPS offers a four-month Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that meets for group sessions from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Groups are both therapeutic and psycho-educational. Individual therapy is scheduled per client’s needs at least once a month. Therapists use evidence-based modalities, such as Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT. There are also less intensive tracks available during the week.
Group and class topics include co-occurring disorders, relapse prevention, anger management, behavior patterns of addiction, irrational and rational thinking patterns, communication skills, HIV/AIDS education, goal setting, life skills and stress management. Gender and cultural issues are addressed so that clients can gain awareness of how individual backgrounds play a role in addiction, as well as discover personal strengths.
STEPS provides an intimate setting during treatment and usually there are no more than five clients in a group. Counselors assign homework and attendance at 12-step meetings is also required. Women requiring dual diagnosis support are referred to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication if necessary. Additional staff includes LACs, therapists and administrative support.
Extras
STEPS provides two drug court programs in the Brevard County facility; one for juveniles and another for adult offenders. Besides mandatory attendance at 12-step meetings, clients receive comprehensive group and individual therapy. Juvenile offenders are provided with free transportation to and from treatment.
