St. Vincents Hospital WestchesterThe Basics

Founded by the Sister of Charity of New York in 1897 in Harrison, New York, St. Vincent’s Hospital Westchester’s Addiction Recovery Services offers outpatient treatment to adult men and women struggling with drugs and alcohol.

Treatment and Staff

Clients begin the treatment process at St. Vincent’s with an in-person assessment with one of the organization’s counselors. During this meeting, the counselor and client discuss the client’s substance abuse history and determine the needed level of care. If the client is deemed a good fit for St. Vincent’s, the counselor helps determine a treatment plan. Clients who are unstable or going through withdrawal, are referred to outside residential treatment or detox.

St. Vincent’s offers a Day Program as well as an evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). The Day program meets Monday through Friday from 9 am to 1:45 pm and is viewed as an alternative to residential treatment. The evening IOP meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm. Both the length and intensity of the programs are based on the needs of the clients.

The groups in both programs cover relapse prevention, life skills and stress management. There are also gender specific groups and CBT-based groups. Counselors also use expressive outlets such as art therapy, creative writing and film analysis. Although the group sizes vary, St. Vincent’s does have a maximum of 15 clients per group. Individual meetings are scheduled accordingly for each client.

St. Vincent’s uses the 12 steps in group meetings and encourages clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings while in treatment. The organization also offers a medication management program that utilizes the principles of the 12-steps to teach clients a responsible and healthy way to approach their medication. Clients in the day program also regularly attend peer-facilitated AA/NA meetings.

St. Vincent is dual diagnosis and refers clients with potential co-occurring disorders to the organization’s on-staff psychiatrist.

The counselors in the outpatient programs consist of CASACs.

Extras

The organization offers multi-family group meetings once a month. These meetings are led by an experienced family therapist and focus on substance abuse education and co-dependency issues.

Although St. Vincent’s outpatient programs do not have official aftercare, clients are encouraged to come back and meet with the psychiatrists if they wish.
