Albany New YorkThe Basics

Founded in 1972, Saint Peter’s Addiction Recovery Center (SPARC) has provided substance abuse services including detox, inpatient and outpatient treatment from a network of locations in and around Albany, New York for over 40 years. The SPARC Men’s Halfway House offers four- to six-month programs in a sober living setting, providing structure and a safe community environment. While living at SPARC, residents are required to participate in 12-step meetings and step work, as well as attend counseling services that employ evidence-based methods of treatment, such as CBT.

Accommodations and Amenities

The SPARC Men’s Halfway House accommodates up to 22 residents in a three-story facility. All clients are quartered on the top floor in 11 double-occupancy bedrooms. Each resident is given his own dresser and nightstand and shares a common area where they can socialize, watch TV and play video games during down time. The main floor holds staff offices and group therapy rooms, and the kitchen and dining room as well as an additional group room and common area (with another TV reserved exclusively for watching sports) are found on the basement level.

Rules and Regulations

During the four- to six-month stay, clients are required to participate in general outpatient-level treatment services, all provided on-site. While living at SPARC, residents are not permitted to work or attend school, instead focusing all their attention on maintaining sobriety and developing healthy social and living habits.

Clients are enrolled in one of two tracks of varying intensity. Both programs require Monday to Friday attendance of treatment, either between 9 am and 12 pm, or 9 am and 2 pm. Group sessions are offered Monday through Thursday and focus on peer and community support, coping skills and wellness (such as cooking and cleaning classes). AA/NA meetings are available on-site Monday through Friday during the day and again on Saturday nights. Clients also have a minimum of one individual session per week.

Following the first 90 days, clients are reassessed by staff to determine whether they are ready to transition out of the sober living environment. The SPARC Men’s Halfway House employs CSACs, CSWs and registered nurses, all of whom are on-site five days a week.

Extras

For any mental health needs, clients work with a staff psychiatrist. Home visits are allowed after the first 30 days, and family nights are scheduled once weekly, allowing loved ones to visit and have dinner and socialize with the men.

In Summary

SPARC Men’s Halfway House has a long-standing tradition of providing quality care and services to the Albany community. As a member of the larger St. Peter’s Addiction Recovery network, clients have access to a range of social services and a network of peers to help sustain lasting recovery. With stays of up to six months consisting of intensive daily therapy and 12-step meetings, the structured program is dedicated to helping men develop a solid foundation of healthy behavior, improved relationships and life skills to support a successful life as contributing members of the community.
