Monroeville AlabamaThe Basics

Southwest Alabama Behavioral Healthcare Systems is an Alabama non-profit organization which offers a variety of support services to Monroe, Clarke, Conecuh and Escambia Counties. Southwest Alabama BHS offers Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) at their main location in Brewton, a small city just north of the Florida Panhandle. These programs are also available in Monroeville and Atmore.

Treatment and Staff

The program at Southwest Alabama BHS is typical of most outpatient treatment, comprised primarily of group therapy held throughout the week. Not all clients attend individual sessions—this is largely determined by a client’s initial assessment with a state-approved clinician. Group sessions are kept small, usually with no more than 15 clients at a time and never more than 20. Detox is not available, though clients can be referred to nearby facilities after intake when necessary.

While Southwest Alabama BHS keeps their facility open from 8 am to 5 pm, all primary program activities are conducted in the evenings from 6 to 9 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Treatment consists of three phases: Phase I, which lasts for 12 weeks with three nights a week of group therapy, Phase II which lasts for 28 weeks with two nights per week and Phase III, which is continuing care one night a week for 26 weeks. It’s important to note that once the third phase is over, Southwest Systems does not offer an aftercare program.

Family therapy is available when appropriate, and clients in need of more intensive options can also receive referrals to nearby, unaffiliated facilities. While counselors at Southwest Systems do encourage clients to attend 12-step meetings in the community, they do not specifically promote a 12-step philosophy of recovery.

There is no medical doctor as part of the Southwest Alabama Behavioral Healthcare Systems outpatient staff, nor is there a psychiatrist. Similarly, there is no dual diagnosis support offered as part of the program. Clinicians handle each client’s intake session, and clients work with LADCs in group and individual sessions.

Extras

Southwest Alabama BHS does offer a mental health recovery program at the same location as well as many other rehabilitation services under their auspices, including mental illness adult in-home services, early intervention and prevention services, all separate from the outpatient program.

In Summary

While Southwest Alabama Behavioral Healthcare Systems is part of a large network of which offers a variety of programs throughout the region, the IOP is fairly basic. Clients attend a mixture of group and individual therapy sessions for up to over a year at a negotiable price. As an added bonus—those seeking mental health services and other recovery related treatment can also benefit from Southwest’s expansive resources in a different program.
