South Pacific Private Review
South Pacific Private is an intensive inpatient and outpatient treatment facility located on Curl Curl Beach in Sydney, Australia. It aims to help men and women struggling with addiction and chronic mental illnesses through individualized treatment. Programming includes detox, relapse prevention, psychoeducation and 12-step support. During their time in treatment clients work on improving the understanding of their illnesses, developing self esteem and acquiring healthy life skills.
Accommodations and Food
South Pacific Private can accommodate up to 53 clients. They live in private and semi private bedrooms with en suite bedrooms, some of which have ocean views. The rooms are simply decorated with single beds, dressers and easy chairs.
The hospital campus sits on the beach and offers plenty of outdoor seating areas that are quiet and serene. There are lounge areas that have some entertainment elements, like TVs and computers, though these things are limited throughout the days since clients are really focused on their recovery. There are also specified times for phone calls and visitations.
Residents eat all meals in the campus cafeteria. They enjoy a variety of healthy menu options for every meal.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment timetables run every day from 6:30 am to about 9 pm. There are up to six hours per day devoted to group therapy and psychoeducational lectures. Every client has a tailored treatment schedule so clients attend a combination of specialized groups on a daily basis.
For detox clients they start their treatment with a medically supervised process ,that usually lasts for up to a week. They they enter into the general population to participate in group sessions. Clients are expected to partake in 100 percent of all programming during their stay.
Programming focus can include trauma-informed care that aims to get to the root of the addiction or mental illness, and tracks specifically for co-occurring disorders. Treatment involves educational elements and exploring past experiences and family dynamics. The Changes Program explores shame or painful past experiences and how it pertains to current addiction issues. It works as a step-down treatment.
Clients have a daily schedule of AA meetings along with daily beach walks, meditation, medication management and community activities. Therapeutic approaches are evidence-based and include CBT, Gestalt and Behavior Modifications methods. There are also smoking cessation support meetings offered for those who need it.
Treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team of specialists that include psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors and nurses and addiction therapists.
Extras
There is an intensive family program for clients in the inpatient program. It runs over the course of four days and consists of intensive therapy sessions, educational workshops and structured therapeutic exercises.
