The Basics

Located in Redondo Beach, California, South Bay Sober Living provides gender-specific transitional care for both men and women. Clients are given structured aftercare, accountability and 12-step support, all while participating in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).  Relapse prevention and life skills training prepares clients to safely return back to their communities with a renewed sense of confidence and freedom from drugs and alcohol.

Accommodations and Amenities

The separate men’s and women’s residences are homes in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Both houses have six bedrooms and three bathrooms each. The bedrooms are all semi-private and fully furnished with ample storage space.

The homes have living rooms with TVs, as well as game rooms complete with ping pong tables. Cable and WiFi are provided. The kitchens are equipped with all the necessary cooking and eating utensils, along with several refrigerators so clients are able to keep their own food separate.

Clients can have their cell phones and use their personal computers, but there are house computers available for communal use as well. There are also laundry facilities on site.

The residences are close to shopping, restaurants, beaches and other sober-friendly recreational activities. After evening AA or NA meetings, clients typically go to dinner, bowling or a movie. There are also plenty of other recreational activities in close proximity to the facilities, including swimming, fishing, surfing, volleyball and basketball.

Rules and Regulations

Clients commit to at least 90 days, though some opt to stay longer. The first 30 days, they are not allowed to use their own car and outings are somewhat restricted. Within the first couple of weeks, they must obtain a sponsor and regularly attend local 12-step meetings. After 60 days of participating in an outpatient program, they have to secure employment or enroll in school.

Those participating in the IOP in the beginning stages of staying at SBSL typically are out of the house from 10 am to about 3 pm. Early morning meditation, chores, and house meetings happen on a weekly basis. Additionally, clients can expect frequent random drug tests. After the first 30 days, the curfew is 11:30 pm on weekdays and 1:30 am on weekends. There are also weekend passes given out as the clients progress through the program.

The facilities are maintained by the clients and run by house managers, all of whom have significant time in sobriety themselves, and are available to offer their experience to residents new to recovery.

In Summary

The philosophy of South Bay Sober Living is that everyone deserves a second chance. They foster this motto by providing beautiful and comfortable living spaces, safe and structured programming and guidance to living a fun and fulfilling life in recovery.
