Midvale UtahThe Basics

Founded in 2008 by Jason Webb, in the Salt Lake City suburb of Midvale, Utah, The Sober Home provides safe and structured sober living for men. Webb, who is the clinical director of the Utah-based Inspire Addiction Recovery and a Master’s-level social worker, and substance abuse drug counselor, felt that there was an unmet demand for good sober living homes in the area. He discovered many clients fell back onto self-destructive habits upon leaving residential treatment and often relapsed because they lacked the proper support and environment to maintain their new-found abstinence.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Sober Home is comprised of four apartments inside a quaint, brown-shingled building. Each unit accommodates three men. Private rooms and doubles are available, and they include twin beds with headboards, comforters, nightstands, dressers and lamps. Each unit includes a quaint kitchen with a country-style table, and chairs.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Kitchens are stocked with ample tableware and cooking utensils. Amenities include a laundry room with double washers, and dryers, cable, house computers, Wi-Fi and utilities. A house manager lives on the premises. Smoking is permitted outside only.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety, and clients on Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), such as suboxone are prohibited. Other forbidden medications include narcotics and benzodiazepines. At The Sober Home, prescribed and approved medications are locked up, when not being dispensed by staff.

Requirements include attending a minimum of three weekly 12-step meetings, getting a sponsor and working the steps, being at the Wednesday night house meeting and performing household chores. Additionally, residents must have a short-term treatment plan. This includes pursuing an education, getting a job or volunteering.

During the first 30 days of residency, outside visitors are not allowed. After that time, the house manager must approve any potential guests. The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At The Sober Home, a zero tolerance policy is enforced, and residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately. Room checks are also conducted, on an arbitrary basis.

Extras

Jason Webb is the author of The Reality of Perception, a self-help book that addresses perception and how it relates to addiction, co-occurring disorders and relationship issues.

In Summary

The Sober Home, which is licensed by the state of Utah, focuses on providing a protected environment so that clients can delve into step work, and concentrate on both long and short-term goals.
