The Basics
Established in 1979 in Hays, Kansas, Smoky Hill Foundation for Chemical Dependency, Inc is a not-for-profit agency that provides outpatient addition treatment, outreach and education to adults and adolescents. These programs are in a group therapy setting, with the option to incorporate individual therapy, gender-specific treatment, specialty groups and extended aftercare services.
Treatment and Staff
The primary outpatient program is designed for clients who may have gotten out of a detox facility or residential program and continued support, or for those who don’t necessarily need the intensity of inpatient care. The initial stage is a twice-a-week curriculum of two-hour group sessions in the evening. The focus is psychoeducation and relapse prevention, along with identifying triggers and past trauma. This level of treatment is on a nine-week cycle, though participation is open ended. Individual therapy is an option for those who have to miss a group meeting or are not able to adjust their schedules in order to participate in the evening program.
Additionally, the facility offers a six-month women’s group that runs two days a week for two hours in the afternoon. There is also a specialized group for methamphetamine addiction that uses the Matrix Model. This group also offers both group and individual therapy and includes frequent drug tests and monitoring by staff.
The adolescent program is classroom-based and is designed to raise awareness of substance abuse and increased usage within the community.
Twelve-step meetings are not facilitated on site but clients are certainly not discouraged from attending AA/NA meetings in their community. Smoky Hill treats clients with a primary diagnosis of substance abuse so clients with a dual diagnosis should seek outside help.
The staff of Smoky Hill is comprised of licensed addiction counselors.
Extras
The aftercare group meets weekly for two hours. Sessions are gender-specific, with the men’s group meeting in the evening and the women meeting in the afternoon.
