Shelbyville IllinoisThe Basics

Shelby County Community Services was created in the late 1960s to promote mental health in Shelby County, a small community in Central Illinois. It received its CARF accreditation in 1978 and provides outpatient substance abuse treatment as well as other behavioral health and support services, including housing referrals. Its outpatient facility is located in Shelbyville along the Kaskaskia River, also home to the Shelby County Memorial Hospital.

Treatment and Staff

After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes group and individual therapy. Groups are offered four times each week, and most clients attend one or two. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed, usually once a week. Most clients complete their outpatient treatment plan in eight weeks; however, clients referred to the program as part of DUI diversion may attend longer in order to fulfill their court-ordered treatment requirements.

The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists and CADCs who use CBT and other evidence-based modalities to help clients manage triggers, build coping skills and learn relapse prevention. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step or other peer support meetings, and their primary counselor may require attendance as part of a treatment plan.

Clients in need of dual diagnosis support receive referrals to therapists and psychiatrists on SCCS’s mental health team.

Extras

Family therapy is available for clients and their loved ones who wish to participate in recovery. The treatment team has an “open door” policy for alumni who are encouraged to check in and create an aftercare plan, which may include peer support meetings and individual therapy once they’ve completed treatment.

In Summary

Shelby County Community Services has provided the residents of Central Illinois with low-cost outpatient substance abuse treatment for nearly 40 years. With its multiple weekly groups and referrals to mental health practitioners, clients have several opportunities to improve their self-care and interpersonal skills.
