The Basics

Serenity Mesa of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a transitional living program for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 14 and 21 who are dealing with addiction issues and co-occurring disorders. Serenity Mesa is part of Healing Addiction in our Community, or HVAC, which is a non-profit organization that, through education and outreach, works to raise awareness around the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic. In addition to housing, Serenity Mesa offers counseling and life skills training through evidence-based models and the 12 steps with the goal of the program being the creation of confident, strong members of society who are free of drugs and alcohol.

Accommodations and Amenities

The transitional housing facility is an 18 bed, one story building that provides dorm style bedrooms furnished with bunk beds, some dresser space and closets. There are several bathrooms in the facility, and the clients are separated by age and gender. There is a large industrial kitchen on site where clients take turns preparing meals for each other, a laundry room, dining area, classrooms and more on the fairly large campus.

Rules and Regulations

Clients can live on campus for up to six months while participating in a number of sober activities, therapy, vocational training, and life skills classes. In addition, there are age appropriate educational services for those who need to get their GED, or are looking to continue their schooling in a college classroom.

There are daily group sessions and at least one individual session per week. Clients attend off-site AA, NA, SMART Recovery, Life Ring and other support meetings in the evenings. The group therapy addresses issues like anger management, relapse prevention, identifying triggers and coping skills. Therapeutic approaches include CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and trauma-informed modalities.

Daily chores are required around the residence and campus; clients learn how to grocery shop, deal with money and live healthfully. Clients are also expected to volunteer within the community. Medical services are readily available—that includes medication management or Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT).

The staff of Serenity Mesa consists of LCSWs, peer support counselors, case workers and a great deal of resident aids and house managers.

Extras

There are several holistic and alternative treatment methods offered at Serenity Mesa, like yoga, equine therapy, meditation, Reiki and acupuncture. Residents also enjoy opportunities for exercise, dance, art and music therapy, and pet therapy through outside agencies within the community.

In Summary

Serenity Mesa is a valuable program in the Albuquerque area, and its main hope is to save young people’s lives before they get caught up in the disease of addiction. For those who have the opportunity to participate in this program, they are sure to experience a life changing gift. It’s a valuable asset to the Albuquerque community at large.
