Sees the Day Sober LivingThe Basics

Founded in 1996 in York, Pennsylvania, by CEO David Dunkel, Sees the Day operates 13 sober living homes for men and women. Dunkel, who has been clean and sober for over 30 years, established Sees The Day to fill a much needed demand for safe and structured recovery housing in the York community. His belief is that recovering alcoholics and addicts stand a better chance of success in recovery when they are allied with other kindred souls in a safe, alcohol and drug-free living environment.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sees the Day operates a total of 13 gender-specific houses, including eight for men and five for women. Houses are kept small, with no more than six clients per residence who are paired in double-occupancy, furnished rooms. All the facilities include fully equipped kitchens. Clients each pitch in $20 per week, towards the purchase of groceries. Residents participate in menu planning. They take turns grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV and laundry facilities, but TV’s are not allowed in bedrooms. Each residence has an onsite house manager, who provides support and supervision.

Rules and Regulations

Typically, new residents have undergone primary care at a drug rehab, but those with less than 30 days are admitted on a case-by-case basis. All clients must be physically and mentally stable and have undergone detox. Clients are encouraged, but not required, to participate in outpatient care at a local drug rehab.

Sees The Day is deeply rooted in the 12 steps and expects all new arrivals to attend 90 AA/NA meetings in 90 days. Additionally, intimate relationships are forbidden during this time. After 90 days, clients must attend a minimum of four weekly 12-step meetings. Other requirements include obtaining and maintaining 32 hours of employment or 25 hours of community service, participating in household chores, being at the house meeting and maintaining respectable behavior towards other housemates.

Upon arrival, residents undergo a probationary period. During this time, the curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. After that time, the curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 1 am Fridays and Saturdays. Random drug and alcohol screenings are admitted. Residents who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises. Other behaviors that warrant expulsion include smoking inside bedrooms, having intimate relations with other Sees the Day residents, or having new relationships within the first 90 days.

The 30-day cost is $560, of which $80 is used towards groceries.

Extras

Sees The Day is certified by the Pennsylvania Alliance Recovery Residence (PARR), an organization that stresses high standards from sober living houses.

In Summary

Dunkel, who is passionate about recovery, created Sees the Day so that he could help those who are new to recovery find safe housing. The environment is designed so that they can build a foundation in their recovery, prior to their transitioning back into the real world. Sees the Day is a great option for men and women who are looking for an intimate East Coast sober living environment that also stresses peer support and camaraderie.
