Darrington WashingtonThe Basics

The Suak-Suiattle Tribal Clinic provides primary care and behavioral health services to members of the Suak-Suiattle Indian Tribe and other residents of Darrington, Washington—a small town 75 miles northwest of Seattle. Located on the reservation, the Suak-Suiattle Tribal Clinic has been providing outpatient services for substance abuse since 2006.

The Suak-Suiattle Indians have made their home near the Suak and Suiattle Rivers for centuries. The tribe lost its land in the late 19th century, bringing it to the brink of extinction. Having rebuilt its ranks in the 20th century, it now has over 200 members.

Treatment and Staff

Given the small community it serves, the Tribal Clinic’s substance abuse services are customized and highly responsive to the individuals seeking treatment. It offers both a standard track and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients attending standard outpatient meet for group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP have a minimum of nine hours of treatment each week, including three group sessions and individual therapy at least once. The duration of treatment is progress-based, and clients can step down to a lower intensity of treatment as their recovery progresses.

The treatment team includes CDPs, and clients with co-occurring disorders can also be seen by the therapists and psychiatrist in the Tribal Clinic’s behavioral health department. Substance abuse treatment is based on the Matrix Model and counselors use CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step framework.

Clients are required to attend two outside 12-step meetings each week. The Tribal Clinic doesn’t currently offer Medicine Wheel or other culturally-sensitive peer support meetings, though it is looking into developing them.

Extras

Counselors work closely with each client to develop a customized aftercare program and follow-up with clients regularly to ensure they’re able to implement their plans.

The Tribal Clinic has a full range of primary care services and also provides appointments with a Naturopath.

In Summary

The Sauk-Suiattle Tribal Health Clinic provides highly-individualized outpatient substance abuse treatment. With access to the clinic’s behavioral health and primary care teams as well, clients are provided with a combination of culturally-sensitive evidence-based and holistic methods that allows them to address the physical and emotional issues impacted by their addiction.
