Santa Anita Family Services PathwaysThe Basics

Santa Anita Family Service’s Pathways (SAFS) program provides outpatient substance abuse counseling for adults and adolescents residing in California San Gabriel Valley. Located in the Los Angeles suburb of Covina, the facility has been offering low cost counseling service since 1951, and through the Pathways program, men, women and adolescents are supported through their journeys to recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Clients interested in treatment must first schedule an intake appointment ($30 for assessment). Those deemed eligible for the substance abuse program will be assigned a primary counselor who they see weekly for individual sessions. In addition, clients attend a 90 minute group once a week. Therapists utilize both CBT and DBT depending on the therapists training. Group topics include identifying triggers, family dynamics, stress management techniques, addiction studies, relapse prevention, self-esteem and if appropriate a co-occurring disorders group for individuals requiring dual diagnosis support. Attendance of AA/NA meetings is required and proof of attendance slips must be signed. There is also random urinalysis testing.

The Pathways adolescent program is for those aged 17 and under. As with the adult outpatient program, young people meet once per week for individual therapy and once for group. Topics are similar to those in the adult program with the addition of peer pressure. Those under the age of 16 are accommodated but must have parental consent. While participating in family therapy is not a requirement for adolescents in the substance abuse program, family members are strongly encouraged to attend.

Duration of the program is six months. Groups vary in size, but are limited to eight people. All therapy sessions are facilitated by Master’s-level interns who are working toward accreditation. The graduate students are overseen by MFTs. Case management is provided to guide each client through the process of recovery.

In Summary

The Pathways outpatient program at SAFS is ideal for low-income families seeking basic counseling services for substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders. Meeting only twice a week—once for individual therapy and one groups—may be insufficient treatment for individuals with severe cases of addiction or with a risk or history of relapse. However the SAFS referral program may help fill in the gaps by connecting clients with community support in the form of required attendance of 12-step meetings, detox, inpatient and Intensive Outpatient (IOP) services.
