Based in Corona, California, Signature Healthcare Services is one of the largest networks of private psychiatric hospitals in the country. It delivers mental health and substance abuse treatment services for children, adolescents and adults in ten hospitals. These are located in California, Arizona, Nevada, Illinois and in multiple locations throughout Texas. Each hospital delivers a continuum of care that includes residential, outpatient and aftercare services with treatment plans that include a variety of therapeutic, 12-step and alternative modalities.
The San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital is located in San Antonio, Texas, near the South Texas Medical Center and offers inpatient psychiatric care and chemical dependency detox services, as well as a substance abuse outpatient program, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Accommodations and Food
The 108-bed facility is divided into adult psychiatric, adolescent and adult substance abuse wings. There are 30 beds available for clients with chemical dependency, which are divided two to a room. Meals and snacks are provided in the cafeteria, and special dietary requirements can be met. However, clients are not allowed to bring any outside food or beverages onto the facility. While it is a hospital setting, clients are allowed to wear their own clothing, and use the on-site gym. No electronic devices are permitted.
Treatment and Staff
Clients enrolling into one of San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital’s programs must be in need of medical detox from chemical dependency or be unable to treat their substance abuse with outpatient programs to be admitted for stabilization. Clients are typically in the inpatient unit for five to seven days and may be transferred to other facilities if they require long-term residential care. An individualized treatment plan is followed for each client, which is created by their doctor, psychiatrist and case manager. Treatment plans for inpatient clients usually include daily visits with the psychiatrist, individual therapy three times a week, and group therapy several times a day. Groups focus on coping skills, family counseling and relapse prevention.
While discharge planning begins almost upon admission, clients are able to work with their team to devise a plan of care they feel challenged by but comfortable with. After stabilization, options include IOP, a PHP and less intensive outpatient treatment. These levels of care are also available for clients hoping to received treatment while avoiding hospitalization and maintaining some level of autonomy.
The PHP is Mondays to Fridays, 9 am to 4 pm, and transportation within a 1o mile radius, breakfast and lunch are included. A Master’s- level therapist, as well as registered and licensed nurses, facilitate the groups, which focus on maintaining long-term sobriety. Psychiatric evaluations are completed weekly. The IOP is also for adults over 18, and meets Mondays through Fridays, 9 am to 12 pm. Clients address a variety of behavioral and emotional issues during these sessions, and the schedule is more flexible than the PHP. Transportation and meals are not provided for these clients. The outpatient program meets only once a week for a two hour group session. Individual therapy is provided as needed. Attendance at 12-step meetings is suggested, but not required, for clients in all levels of care.

Extras
Inpatient clients also benefit from weekly visits with a therapy dog, as well as art therapy. A specialized military PHP track is available for active duty personnel, dependents and veterans.

While brief, the inpatient program offers intensive treatment, and sets participants up to transition into the PHP and then IOP. Clients can remain in one of the outpatient programs for as long as they like, which ensures a strong foundation for recovery, and lowers the risk of relapse.
